여성의 사회참여와 핵가족화는 아동 양육에서 유치원의 역할을 더욱 중요하게 만들고 있으며, 복지와 지역의 형평성을 고려할 때 유치원의 입지선정은 더욱 중요시된다. 본 논문은 서울에서의 유치원의 공간적 분포 와 성장 특성에 초점을 맞추어 유치원의 공간특성을 밝히고 관악구를 중심으로 유치원 취원 아동의 행태적인 특성을 규명하고자 하였다. 유치원의 성장과 분포는 서울시역내에서 거주지역의 확대방향과 일치하고 있으며, 도심부에서 주변 지역으로 유치원의 성장과 확대가 이루어졌다. 유치원 취원아동의 행태를 보면 거리나 교사보다는 유치원의 프로그램과 시설의 질적 측면이 가장 중요한 유치원 선정 요인으로 나타나고 있다 특히 가족의 소득이 유치원의 유형을 결정짓는데 결정적인 인자가 되고 있어 저소득층의 경우 초등학교 병설유치원이나 종교단체에서 운영하는 유치원을 거리에 관계없이 선호하는 경향을 보인다. 이것은 앞으로의 유치원 공교육화를 고려할 때 가족 소득과 부모의 사회경제적 특성을 고려하여 지역의 특성에 따른 상이한 형태의 유치원의 설치가 필요함을 시사하여 준다.

The growth of women`s labor participation under nuclear family structure requires infant education facilities that enable to cradle children and to prepare for suitable environment. It would be important to consider the locations of kindergartens in terms of the standard of welfare and regional values. This paper investigates the growth and distribution patterns of kindergartens in Seoul and considers the behavioral characteristics of kindergartens in the studying area, Kwanak-gu, southern part of Seoul, from the supply side. The growth and distributional patterns of kindergarten are closely related to the patterns of residential expansions and the direction of population growth in Seoul, from center to periphery. The day care programs and qualify of facilities are considered to be more important factors for choosing a kindergarten, rather than distance and staff qualities. Furthermore, the family income plays an important role in choosing different types of kindergartens. Low income families prefer public schools and church managed facilities regardless of commuting distance. It implies that we need to consider the regional family income structure and the possibilities of target age groups to order to determine the type and number of kindergartens in the region under the public education beginning from the year of 1998.
