이 글은 현대 이탈리아에서 반목적으로 표출되는 정치경제적, 사회적 제반 양상을 이해하기 위해 국가 발전의 성격과 전개과정을 국토구조의 형성과 하위 지역권의 사회경제적 구성, 그리고 그 역학관계와 지역정체성 의 측면에서 탐색한 것이다. 이탈리아 국민국가의 틀 안에서 중심권, 한계권, 주변권, 그리고 수도권으로 구분되는 대지역권들이 공간경제적 동태라 정치사회적 조절양식과 관련하여 각기 분화적이고 독자적인 성격을 뚜렷이 보여주고 있으며. 빈번히 갈등적 대치관계를 형성하면서 국가의 일체성을 크게 위협하고 있다. 오늘날 이탈리아가 새로운 국가통합모델을 찾아야 한다면, 이를 위해선 일국내 지정학적 구도에 대한 보다 깊은 통찰이 요구된다.

Since 1990s, Italy has been facing a deep socio-political crisis. One of main reasons for this crisis resulted from the longstanding regional fragmentation processes in the Italian nation-state. The modem Italy can be divided into four macro regions: the northwestern core region, the so called Mezzogiomo`s marginal region, the periphery region of the Third Italy, and the capital region around Rome. In view of the economic structure, political regulation, and sociocultural consciousness of regions, this article tries to explain the interregional relationships and the specific identities of each region. It is evident that there are conflicting and interdependency relations between regions and diverging developments of four Italies give a apparent burden on territorial integration as well. n
