What is the city? Is it notoriously difficult to define? The real quality of cities in their regional relation can be only adequately appreciated in the light of their history especially in its emergence, in other words, through the historico-geographic approach from the very beginning. This paper concern with the emergence of cities and its definition, very partially. We all know what a city is and when something is not a city. As usual, however, things become less certain once we leave the realm of common-sense definition. Cities have been defined according to the numerous criteria but no brief, single definition has been advanced that satisfies all scholars.
