This paper investigates the origin of neolithic town in Anatolia, Turkey. About 9000 years ago in Catalho¨yu¨k near the modern town of Konya, people started painting the insides of their houses with remarkable pictures and symbols. The inhabitants of Catalho¨yu¨k had come together to live in an early town of between 5,000 and 10,000 people. This site was discovered in 1958 by J. Mellaart and colleagues. In the years after 1965, the site was protected by the Turkish government. Catalho¨yu¨k took part in widespread networks of exchange, obsidian especially. It was a main factor of the town growth. Dwellers living near obsidian producing volcanoes probably stockpiled it to pay for farm produce.
