The aim of this study is to determine how non-native subjects learning Japanese perceive tonal accent of the Tokyo dialect. The preliminary results for 3 different language groups: French, Chinese, and Korean students are presented in this paper. The test material included Isolated 3-, 4-, and 5-syllable words with different tonal accents (low-high-low, high-low, and low-high) pronounced by a speaker from Tokyo. The task was to identify the accent kernel ("high" of "high-low" tone change). The statistics on the 30 subjects of each linguistic community show that the "high-low" pitch fall was not fully perceived and the errors made depended primarily on the accent type concerned, and the subjects` mother tongue.
