Rural-to-urban migration and suburbanization have been two characteristic patterns of population movements in Korea. Large cities are the center of these migration flows. This paper explores the role of large cities by examining the geographic patterns of migration flow and socioeconomic characteristics of migrants to and from the large cities. In geographic flow, Seoul plays a funnel like role sending numerous migrants to suburban areas while attracting migrants from other urban and rural areas across the nation; other large cities attract migrants from nearby areas and sending them to Seoul. n social mobility, out migrants reveal better socioeconomic indicators such as housing ownership, employment status, and occupational categories than those of in migrants. These findings elaborate migration patterns into the role of large cities mediating migration flows and providing for social mobility to migrants.
