도시문화경관이라는 연구대상은 도시지리학과 문화지리학 분야 모두에서 그 동안 많은 주목을 받지 못하여 왔다. 이는 두 분야 모두 전통적으로 기능론적인 접근과 체계론적인 접근, 그러고 형태론적인 접근을 통하여 도시공간 현상을 조명해왔기 때문이라고 할 수 있다. 산업사회를 넘어 탈산업사회로의 진전이 빠르게 진행되고 있는 현재의 상황에서 도시지리학과 문화지리학은 질적으로 변한 도시를 설명하기 위한 새로운 방법론을 개발하여 그 연구지평을 확대해야 한다. 도시문화경관이 도시의 질적인 특성을 반영하고. 인간과의 교감을 통해서 상호 의존적이며 상호 제어적인 관계를 유지하고 있다는 새로운 관점은 산업사회 및 탈산업사회의 도시 성격을 규명하는데 큰 도움을 줄 것이다. 도시문화경관은 그 속에 담겨져 있는 의미와 상징성을 이해하기 위하여 독해해야 하는 하나의 텍스트이다. 도시문화경관은 또한 문화정체성의 함양이나 권력관계의 형성 및 유지, 소비사회의 매개체로서의 역할 등을 수행하며 현대도시를 이끌어가고 있다. 이러한 것과 관련된 연구대상과 주제들은 한국의 대도시에도 산재해 있으며. 이에 대한 다양하고 깊이있는 연구가 요망되고 있다.

Little attention has been paid to the study of urban cultural landscape not only in urban geography but also in cultural geography till recently. The reason is that both geographies have tried to explain urban spatial phenomena in the functional, the systematic, or the morphological approach. Seeing the advance to the post industrial society over the industrial one, urban and cultural geography should expand the research horizon to a new methodology so as to understand the cities changed in quality as well as in appearance. The urban cultural landscape can be regarded as a text whose meanings and symbols should be interpreted. It also plays the role of cultivating urban cultural identity, of representing and persisting power relations, and of mediating human and societal consumption. Research objects and themes concerning such roles are also found in Korean large cities, and thus in-depth research on them is needed.
