경제 지향적인 산업화를 통한 급속한 경제 발전을 추구하는 한국의 정책과 국가의 높은 도시 성장률은 환경의 질에 중대한 영향을 미치고 있다. 최근 몇 년 동안, 정부와 기업, 사설 단체들과 개별 시민들은 이러한 문제들을 제기하기 시작했다. 더욱이 기업과 정부의 성장정책과 환경의 질을 강조하는 사람들 사이에는 심각한 갈등이 존재한다. 이 글은 쓰레기 처리, 대기, 수질, 그린벨트 등의 한국 도시의 환경 이슈들을 개괄한다. 이러한 문제들이 제기되도록 이끈 주요한 이슈와 행위들을 논의한다.

Korea`s policy of rapid economic development through an industrial oriented economy and the country`s high urban growth rate have had a significant impact on the quality of the environment. In recent years, the government, business, private organizations, and individual citizens have begun to address some of these problems. Still, there are major conflicts between the growth policies of business and government and those who stress environmental quality. This chapter reviews waste management, air, water and greenbelt environmental issues in Korean cities. It discusses the major issues and actions that have been taken to address these problems.
