본 연구는1995년에서 1999년 기간 동안에 전주시 소매업 구조의 공간적 변화를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 소매업 유형별로 소매업 사업체와 종사자의 수에 대한 공간적 분포가 조사되어 지도화 되었다. 최근 사회경제적 변화에 큰 영향을 준 외환위기의 전후로 전주시 소매업 규모는 감소하였지만 도시의 성장으로 소매활동의 공간분포가 분산되고 있음이 발견되었다. 소매활동의 분산과정에서 도심의 소매기능이 약화되고 있지만 여전히 도심은 소매활동이 가장 밀집한 소매중심지 였다. 또한 소매활동의 성장이 도심인접지역과 주변지역에서 비슷한 수준으로 주변지역의 소매업 성장 가능성이 파악되었다. 전주시 소매업 분산화의 요인으로서 도심외곽의 대규모주택 지구로의 인구분산과 대형소매점의 증가 추세가 강조되었다.

This paper analyzes the spatial change of retail structure between 1995 and 1999 in Chonju. For the purpose of this study, changes in the number of stores and employment for different types of retail activity are examined. After the financial crisis in 1997, Chonju has experienced a little decrease of the overall retail activity. But, as the city grows, the spatial distribution of the retail activity has been dispersed from the core area of the city. Although the dispersed pattern of the retail activity would mean a decentralization of the retail structure, the core area, as its retail function is reduced, is still the focus of the retail activity in the city. As the similar growth of the retail activity occurred in both inner and outer areas of the city, there would be plenty of opportunity for growth in the outer area of the city. The growth of population in the new residential areas outside the core area and the emergence of large scale retail stores should be regarded as important forces behind the current decentralization of the retail structure.
