본 연구의 목적은 서울시, 인천시, 부천시 외국인 산업연수생의 분포를 시기별로 비교 분석하여 외국인 노동자 취업의 공간적 전개 과정의 특징을 밝히는데 있다. 외국인 노동자는 초기에 섬유 ·의복제품제조업체와 금속제품제조업체가 집중한 공단지역을 중심으로 분포하며, 시간이 지날수록 외국인 고용에 관한 정보의 확대로 교통이 불편하고 노동력이 부족한 시 외곽 제조업밀집지역에서 고용이 증가하고 있다. 제조업체의 규모와 업종 특성이 노동자의 공간적 분포에 큰 영향을 미치는데 특히 숙련도와 경력을 요하는 금속제품 제조업은 소규모 업체의 외국인의 고용이 효율적이지 못하다. 또한 외국인 노동자 고용에 있어서 시간이 지남에 따라 지리적으로 인접한 업체들간의 정보교환으로 유사하거나 동일 국적의 노동자를 고용하게 된다. 이들 업체들은 업종과는 무관하게 초기에 고용한 인근 업주의 긍정적 인식에 상당한 영향을 받은 것으로 밝혀졌으며 시간이 지남에 따라 주변의 외국인 노동자의 국적이 단일화되는 경향이 나타나는데 특히 좁은 범위내에 인접한 업체들에서 그러한 경향이 뚜렷했다.

This study analyzes and describes spatial process of the foreign laborers(industrial technical trainees) employment across time in Seoul, Inchon and Puchon regions. Foreign laborers were concentrated in industrial estate mainly in textiles, apparel and metal production sectors. The spatial patterns of foreign laborers employment gradually expand out of the estate. The characteristics and size of factories affect importantly on the spatial distribution of foreign laborers. In particular, small metal production industries do not employ foreign laborers since they need high quality skill and career. Same nationality foreign laborers as time passes are increased in small areas by sharing information with neighboring factories. Most of foreign laborers employment are affected not for the kind of industries, but the positive perception of initial employer and this process generate the concentrated pattern of same nationality foreign laborers in small areas.
