Development of the Drug use Prevention Model for Korean Adolescents

Purpose : Adolescent drug use is increasing in Korea. An appropriate intervention program for this problem, however, was not developed. Most of the programs in the past was consisted of one session education. The drug use prevention model needs to be considered psychosocial variables such as self-esteem and social skills. The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive drug use prevention program for Korean adolescents. Methods: The study design was nonequivalent control group pre-post test of quasi-experimental with a convenience sample of 444 high school male students who were at one high school located in Seoul. Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire. Drug knowledge, attitude about drug use, self-esteem, social skill and delinquent behavior were measured. The program was consisted of the effects and side effects of drugs, improving self-esteem, social skill training, stress and anger management, and decision making and was held total 10 sessions. Paired t-test was used to analyse the difference between the pre- and post- scores. Two sample t-test was used to analyse the difference between the score of experimental and control group. Results: There were significant difference in knowledge after the education between experimental and control group(p<.05) but no significant differences in attitude toward drug use, self-esteem, social skill, and delinquent behavior

.05). Conclusion: The study results revealed that the drug use prevention program was not effective in promoting negative attitude, self-esteem, social skills, and delinquent behavior. These findings might be due to the too large group size and short period of social skill training. So. Further study is needed using small group size and extended program period.
