The target of my study is to establish philosophical foundations of social service by investigating the definition historical meaning and the ideal of social service. First, I define it as "an action to cure and prevent social diseases." A merit of this definition is to lay a ground for distinguishing two levels of social service. This leads us to realize that the social service should turn into a social movement because "love in structures" is more important than charity in modern societies. Secondly, I elucidate the historical meaning of social service. As a result, I claim that the social service is a reliable solution to the problem of "the end of work" caused by the completion of global market. Finally, I propose the fraternity, that is the friendship or the brotherliness, as the ideal of social service. Because the problems threatening our current lives are global, we must deal with them with fraternity, which is a new canon of the critical reason.
