여성은 침묵하는 자로 간주되어 왔다. 여성의 침묵은, 여성이 겸손해서 또는 자발적인 노력에 의해 형성된 것은 아니다. 오히려 여성의 침묵은 남성의 일방적인 요구와 억압에 의해 이루어졌다. 그러나 침묵이 지속되다 보니, 여성의 본성인 것처럼 내면화되었을 뿐이다. 여성의 침묵은 겸손과 귀감의 모델이라기 보다는, 수동성과 무기력과 열등성의 상징으로 간주되어 왔다. 그래서 침묵하는 여성, 말이 없는 여성은 언어가 없는 자이며, 사유할 줄 모르는 자로 오인 받아 왔다. 침묵은 여성을 비언어, 비존재로 전락시킨다. 이 글에서는 침묵 때문에 여성을 이런 식으로 보는 태도를 비판한다. 더 나아가서 침묵은 단지 비언어도, 수동성도, 열등성을 상징하는 것도 아니며, 오히려 그런 이분법을 깰 수 있는 가능성을 지니고 있다. 침묵은 비언어가 아니라, 언어와 비언어의 경계에 있는 제 3의 어떤 것, 능동성과 수동성의 경계에 있는 제 3의 어떤 것이며, 새로운 언어 기제를 창출할 수 있는 기반이 된다. 이때 새로운 언어 기제를 발굴하기 위해 정신 분석학의 영향을 받은 신 프랑스 페미니스트들의 논의를 살필 필요가 있다. 이들은, 소쉬르가 언어를 랑그와 빠를로 나눈 점에 착안하여, 인간의 무의식에서 도출해낼 수 있는 빠를을 강조한다. 빠를은 의식세계(상징계)의 랑그적 언어로는 담아내지 못하는 사적 공간이다. 이 공간이 랑그적 언어에 의해 억압될 때, 무의식의 힘은 여성적 특징으로 전이되거나, 광기(히스테리) 같은 역동적 형태로 나타난다. 침묵은 여성의 역동적 형태를 양산하는 힘이다. 헤겔의 주인과 노예의 변증법에서 노예에게 요구되는 강요된 노동이 자유와 자기의식을 자각하는 기반이 되듯이, 여성의 침묵은 내면에 은폐되어 있는, 무의식 속에 은폐되어 있는, 여성의 창조적이고 역동적인 힘을 이끌어내는 기반이다.

Women have been seen as silent subjects. Women`s silence has come into being not because they are humble nor because they choose to be silent. It bas been made by male demand and oppression But while the silence has continued it has become internalized as characteristic of woman`s nature. Yet rather than being praised as a model of womanhood it has been thought of as a symbol of passiveness and inferiority. Thus, women who are silent and voiceless have been considered to be without language alto unable to think Silence relegates them to the beings of non-language and non-existence. This paper offers a critique of such a negative attitude towards women`s silence. Rejecting the view that silence represents non-language, passivity and inferiority, it argues that silence has a potential to break away from the binary view. It stresses that silence is not non-language, but something between language and non-language, between activeness and passiveness, that is a basis on which a new language system can be created. In order to discuss the new language system one needs to consider the debates of French neo-feminists that (haw on psychoanalysis. Reminded that Saussure divided language into language and parole, they focus on parole that exists in unconsciousness. Parole is a private space that langue of conscious symbolic order cannot offer. This space, when repressed by langue, changes to feminine qualities of presents a dynamic appearance such as hysteria. Silence is thus a force which generates a dynamic mode of womanhood. Just as forced slave labor in Hegel`s dialectic of master and slave becomes the basis of the slave`s consciousness far freedom and self-awareness, women`s silence is the basis that brings out a creative and dynamic power that is hidden and regressed in the female unconsciousness.
