This paper discusses the definition of synonyms, the method and principles used in that process, and also the various classes of differentiation and analysis of synonyms. It focuses particularly on the clear distinction between the different meanings of the synonyms that are used in language and speech. It also emphasizes the great value and significant status of the research of synonyms in Chinese teaching. We hold the view that although the study of synonyms in Chinese language is the focal point of this paper, we should not neglect that the word-of-the-same-indication in speech is a phenomenon in language also.
