한국의 서양 고전 번역 작업은 사회적으로나 학문적으로나 홀대를 받고 있는 게 사실이다. 그런데 이런 홀대의 배경에는 동/서양의 이분법이나 전통/현대의 이분법이란 잘못된 인문학적 관점이 깔려 있는 것 같다. 이러한 이분법들은 문화의 역사적 측면을 고려하지 않는다는 점에서 문제가 되며, 또 그런 시각 탓에 고전의 의미에 대해 부정적인 태도를 취하게 된다. 여기서 우리는 `classics`의 의미에 `표준`의 뜻이 포함되어 있다는 것을 고려할 필요가 있다. 서양의 경우 고전은 온고지신(溫故知新)의 방식을 통해 그들의 문화 속에 도도히 살아 있으며, 이런 점에서 서양 고전 번역의 작업은 서양 문화를 이해하는 데 기초가 된다. 더 나아가 우리의 조건을 염두에 둘 때, 서양 문화는 단순히 타자의 문화라고 하기 어려우며, 이런 까닭에 서양 고전 연구 및 번역의 작업은 한국의 인문학적 탐구에도 핵심적인 기여를 할 수 있을 것으로 여겨진다. 한편 서양 고전 번역에 수반되는 어려움은 여러 가지가 있겠는데, 우리는 무엇보다도 독자의 이해를 돕는 번역을 좋은 번역이라고 해야 할 것이다. 이를 위해서는 번역문의 가독성이 중시되어야 하며, 또한 주석의 작업이 반드시 동반되어야 한다. 주석의 작업에는 해석과 비판의 과정이 포함되기 예문에 고전 번역 작업은 새로운 한국 인문학의 전통을 세우는 대 큰 기여를 할 수 있을 것이다.

The translation of western classical literatures has been neglected in Korea both from social side and from scientific side. I think that the result was caused by two dichotomies: the one is the dichotomy between the oriental culture and the western culture, the other is the dichotomy between tradition and modernity. Then Theses dichotomies take no account of the historicity of cultures, and disregard the significance of the classics. But We have to pay attention to the meaning of `classics` as standard. For the western classics has a continual influence on the modern western culture. Hence, in understanding the western culture, many translations of western classical literatures is necessary. Moreover, these translations may also contribute greatly to Korean humanities. Because the translation is not merely a linguistic world but a kind of interpretative inquiry.
