요즈음, 논어해석에서 공자의 인과 충서를 심미적 감수성, 공동체적 윤리, 어짊, 고도의 통치술로 규정하고 있다. 그러나 그것이 타자와 관계를 맺는 층서와 연결이 되는 데는 정신적인 측면만을 강조하는 등 맡은 문제점이 발생하였다. 주희는 인을 마음의 능력과 사람의 이치로 규정하고, 그것이 우리 마음속에 본래성 즉 보편적인 인격으로 있고, 그 속에서 남에 대한 사랑과 애정이 우러나온다고 주장한다. 그리고 애정은 속마음(충)과 배려(서)로 나눈다. 그리하여 인과 충서, 충과 서사이에 중층적인 구도를 제시하여 포괄적이고 일관된 해석을 보이고 있다. 그러나 주희의 인 즉 사랑은 규정된 틀에 의해 제한되고 있지만, 타자에 대한 애정은 그 틀을 벗어나려고 한다. 주희가 해석한 공자의 충서야말로 인간에 대한 새로운 이해가 담겨있다. 존재론적으로나 인식론적인 사고틀에서는 볼 수 없는, 실천적인 만남 속에서 자기가 변화해 가는 과정이 그것이다. 타자와의 만남이 중요한 철학적인 주재가 되고있는 지금의 현실에서 공자의 충서 개념은 충분히 재해석될 여지가 있다.

From the beginning it seems difficult to illuminate the epistemological frame, not through the treatise but through the interpretation of the Analects. However it can make the general roader appreciate Confucius or the Analects. In the Analects, it is the liberty of choice that one interpret Confucius` Ren(仁) and Zhong-Shu(忠恕) as the aesthetic sensibility, or the communal ethics, or the benevolence, or the treacherous policy of the ruler. But these interpretations have a great difficulty in relating Ren to Zhong-Shu. In addition, these interpretations, without any rational reason regard Chu-Hsi(朱熹)`s interpretation as metaphysical. However Chu-Hsi does not only offer the metaphysical determination of Ren but the virid concept of Zhong-Shu. According to him the concept of Zhong-Shu evades the metaphysical frame of Ren. In terms of this tension of Chu-Hsi`s thoughts, we can see the limits and possibilities of the Analects. Therefore it is a Short-sighted view to blindly consecrate Confucius and think his thoughts comprise all philosophical problems. In conclusion Zhong-Shu as interpreted by Chu-Hsi gives us the new insight into humanity. For it, beyond the metaphysical or epistemological frame, designates the our practical endeavor of self-transformation though the encounter with others.
