이 글은 현대 사회이론의 중요한 입장임에도 불구하고 아직껏 우리 사회철학계에 제대로 알려져 있지 않은 루만의 `자기준거적·자기생산적 체계이론`의 의의와 한계를 비판적으로 소개해 보는데 일차적 목표를 두고 있다. 이러한 간략한 비판적 소개는, 우리현실과 연관지어 그의 체계이론이 우리의 사회현실을 조망하고 그로부터 드러난 다양한 문제들을 해결하는 데 실제로 기여할 수 있는지, 아울러 우리의 현실을 제대로 읽어낼 수 있는 자생적인 사회이론을 모색하는 데 유의미한 지침과 방향을 제시해 줄 수 있는지의 여부를 검토해 보기 위한 전(前) 단계로서, 체계이론의 내용을 대략적으로 살펴보는 `예비적인 탐색`의 한 작업으로 의도된 것이다. 루만의 체계이론에 대한 이 같은 비판적 통찰은, 적어도 두 측면에서 우리에게 반성적 시각을 갖도록 도와 줄 것이다. 우선 `이론적 차원`의 반성으로서, 사회에 대한 행위이론적 접근방식이나 해석학적 탐구방식이 지닌 이론적 통찰의 한계를 자각토록 이끌어줄 것이다. 다음으로 `실천적 반성씩 측면에서, 인간의 이성에 기초한 분석과 판단, 실천적 행위야말로 현대 사회의 병리적 현상들을 제대로 진단하고 그에 대한 해결책을 제시해 줄 핵심적 동력원이라는 `계몽주의적 믿음`에 대해 `근본적으로` 반성해 볼 것을 우리에게 권고해 줄 것이다.

Though Luhmann`s system theory is one of the main contemporary social theories, it has not been yet known well to our sphere of social philosophy. Talking this situation into consideration, in this paper I intend to introduce critically Luhmann`s `theory of self-referential·autopoetic system`. In my opinion this brief critical sketch of Luhmann`s system theory may give us several important lessens as to the ways to cope with various social problems and pathologies in our society. Besides it will serve to provide us with useful guides and right directions far the construction of spontaneous social theory which can illuminate exactly the reality of our own society. As a consequence of such a critical inquiry into Luhmann`s system theory, we may acquire two kinds of reflexive insights. First, as a reflection of theoretical level, it will lead us to realize the limits of the analyses which broth the approach of action theory alto the hermeneutical approach hold. Secondly, as a reflection1 on the aspect of practice, it may advise us to examine radically `the mythology of Enlightenment` that the analyses, decisions and practical activities based on human reason are the essential dynamic force to diagnose the contemporary society and to give the answer to those problems.
