본고는 B. J. L. Berry와 W. L. Garrison 등이 어떻게 중심지의 계층성의 존재를 실증했는가를 그들의 논문들을 통해 살핀 것이다. 그들은, 중심지연구에 있어서 처음으로 계량적 방법을 사용했을 뿐만 아니라, 인구의 최소요구치(threshold population) 등의 새로운 개념을 도입해 중심지이론에 새로운 해석을 부여하였다.
