데모크리토스의 원자론적 유물론에서 실재하는 궁극적 존재는 원자와 허공이다. 그 유일한 참된 지식은 이것들에 대한 지식이다. 그러한 지식은 결코 감각에 의해 얻어질 수 없다. 왜냐하면 그것들은 둘 다 감각으로는 지각할 수 없는 것이기 때문이다. 그것들은 오직 사유에 의해 알려진다. 그러나 데모크리토스의 인식관련 토막글들을 주의깊게 분석해보면 감각과 이성적 사유의 작용과정이 같다는 것을 알 수 있다. 즉 이성은 궁극적으로 원자 유출물들의 유입에 의해 야기되고 그것들의 운동이 사유 또한 발생시킨다. 마치 영혼 원자의 운동이 비슷하게 감각기관에서 지각을 일으키는 것과 같다. 이것은 데모크리토스가 이성이 원자들에 대한 직접적인 인식능력을 갖고 있다는 생각했음을 말해준다. 감각은 우리를 데리고 갈 수 있는데 까지 데리고 가고 우리가 지각의 문지방 너머를 지나갈 때 이성이 이어받는다. 이것은 근본적으로 다른 과정이 아니라 다만 동일한 과정의 새로운 수준에로의 계속임을 암시한다. 요컨데, 데모크리토스는 비록 감각들이 실재를 반영하지 못했다고 회의적으로 생각했을 지라도 그러나 이성은 그것들로부터 종국적으로 실재에 이르는 근거들을 얻는다고 주장하고 있는 것이다. 현상이 보이지 않는 실재에 이르는 창문이다라는 경구에 그가 동의하는 것이분명한 한, 그것은 모종의 추론과정을 의미하는 것이리라, 참으로 그것은 유물론적 가정이 유지되고 있는 한, 필연적인 귀결이라 할 것이다.

In Democritus, the real existencies are the atoms and the void : Knowledge on therm can never be obtained by the senses, for they are both imperceptible to the senses. They can only be known to the mind(nous) by thought. But the further analysis of Democritus` fragments has shown that their process of operation are the same: the mind is roused by the influx of idols of atoms and its monement results in thought, just as the movement of soul-atoms similarly produced in the sense-organs results in perception. It suggests that Democritus thought that the mind had direct cognizance of the atoms: The senses take us as far as they can go, and when we pass beneath the threshold of perception the mind takes over. This does not suggest a radically different process but only a continuation to a new level of the same process, Certainly Democritus maintains that though the mind thought ill of the senses because in themselves they did not reflect reality, yet it ultimately took its evidence from them. Does it indicate some process of inference? It it is true that Democritus approved of dictom that phenomena are a window on the unseen, it really must be the inevitable hypothesis to be maintained by Democritus as materialist.
