The absence of political theory (or a theory of the state) in Marx`s work has generally been interpreted as an inevitable consequence of the economic reduct6ionist tendency of his materialism. However, there is no denying the fact that Marx is one of the modern thinkers who open up the possibility of addressing the problem of politics in a materialist way that goes beyond the traditional categories of thought handed down to us from classical and modern political theories. with no doubt, his materialist discourse presents us a new way of questioning and conceptualizing what is political in modern world. Starting from a hypothesis that the question of politics is a privileged point of entry into Marx`s view on modemity, the present paper is intended to drw a broad outline of the conception of politics or `the political` as it is presented in Marx`s materialist discourse. For this purpose, it will focus on the concept of power or power relations which plays a pivotal role in Marx in overcoming the modern idealist mode of thought.
