본고에서는 ‘올가미’를 뜻하는 단어들의 語彙史를 문헌과 방언을 통하여 검토한다. ‘올가미’는 [[옭]_(v.)+[아미]_suff.]_(N) 의 구성으로 “끈, 줄, 철사 등으로 고를 지어 잡아매([옭]_(v.))는 도구([아미]_suff.)”를 뜻한다. 그것은 사냥도구가 아닐 수도 있다. 이 ‘올가미’를 이용한 사냥도구로서의 ‘올무’는 ‘*올??’로 재구될 가능성이 있는데, 이는 ‘올모, 올무, 올미’ 같은 형태 變形으로부터 재구된다. 방언형으로는 ‘올무’계통 이외에 ‘올가미’계통과 ‘홀갱이’계통이 널리 쓰이는데, 이로부터 ‘*흙-’이란 동사어근을 재구할 수 있다. 그밖에 ‘옹노(옭#노), 몽노(목#노)’와 같은 合成語도 쓰이고, @@淆形인 ‘옹무(올무+옹노)’, ‘올룽개(올개미+홀룽개)’ 등이 중간지역에서 쓰이기도 한다. 한자어 ‘套子, 套頭 등은 사냥도구 이외에 목매어 자살하는 것으로 쓰였다.

This stduy aims to examine the history of the words with the meaning of `olgami` through the analysis of written texts and dialectal data. The word `olgami` with the structure of [[olk]_(v.)+[ami]_(suff.)]_(N) has the meaning of a lope of rope with a running knot that becomes tighter when the rope is pulled. Therefore, it may not necessarily indicate a hunting tool. The word `olmu`, a hunting tool with `olgami`, can be reconstructed as `*olmΛi` by the comparison with the variants such as `olmo` and `olmi`. The dialectal variation includes the `olmu`-type, the `olgami`-type, and the `holgæŋi`-type, from which a verbal root like `*holk-` can be reconstructed. Compound words such as `oŋno(olk#no)` and `moŋno(mok#no)` are additionally found. Blending forms like `oŋmu(olmu+oŋno)` and `olluŋgæ(olgæmi+holluŋgæ)` are also used in the transitional areas. Sino-Korean words like `t^(h)uca(套子), t^(h)udu(套頭) has been also used for the meaning of `a strangler`s knot`, in addition to the meaning of a hunting tool.
