Family Support, Self-Esteem and Powerlessness in Psychiatric Patients

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships among family support, self-esteem and powerlessness in Psychiatric patients. A total of 169 subjects were influenced and they were hospitalized over 4 weeks at a local mental care facility located in Kyung Nam Province. Data were collected by face to face interviews from March 15th to April 15th. 2002. The instruments used for this study were family support scale(Hyun Sook, Kang. 1984), the self-esteem tool(Rosenberg, 1969). A Miller`s powerlessness behavioral Assessment tool(1992) and Callista Roy`s Health-Illness powerlessness tool(1972) revised by the researcher. The data collected were statistically analyzed by SAS program t-test. ANOVA and Pearson Correlation were employed to understand general characteristics of the sample to examine the relationships among study variables. The results of the study were as follows : the mean score of family support was 3.44 : the mean score of self-esteem was 3.55 : the mean score of powerlessness was 1.76. Family support had significantly a positive relationships with self-esteem. In addition family support and self-esteem respectively had a significant inverse relationships with powerlessness. Among general characteristics of the sample, the degree of self-esteem were shown as significant factors that influenced the degree of family support : the economic state was demonstrated as a significant factor influencing self-esteem : and the age, marital status, economic status and frequency of admission were shown as significant factors influencing powerlessness.
