The Communication Training Needs of Nurses in the University Hospital

The purpose of this study was to investigate the communication training program for registered nurses. This study presented communication effectiveness, the kinds of communication training skills received before, the kind of communication skills required in nursing performance and 10 communication skills used in the prior studies(Johnson, 1994) and surveyed their will to receive such training. The subject was 274 nurse working in the university hospital in Incheon. Data were collected from Feb. 1 to Feb, 28, 2001. The SAS program was used to analyze the collected data. The results of the study were as follows: 1. Registered nurses showed effectiveness in listening, persuasion, non-verbal skill and small group discussion. They showed mid-effectiveness in presentational speaking while technical report writing, leadership, employment interviewing and public speaking were the skills not used effectively. 2. Nurses have received the skill training of listening, small-group discussion, and leadership. The major source for this training was collage. Job-related education, high school education and continuing education program were the other sources. 3. Nurses put the value of communication skills in the job performance in the order of listening, persuasion, non-verbal skill and presentation. This accords with the items required additional training. 4. Presentational speaking and leadership were the highly preferred skills (92.3% and 91.2% Thad the will to receive communication skills training except employment interview and performance appraisal interviewing. They preferred the continuing education of the experts.
