Psychiatric Mental Health Professional` Perception of Recovery State from the Psychiatric Disability

Purpose : This study was performed to explore psychiatric mental health professional perception of recovery state from psychiatric disability. Method : Data were collected from 50 psychiatric mental health professionals who worked in 21 diverse clinical settings: 18 Community mental health centers. 2 Public mental offices, 1 Social rehabilitation center in Korea. Data were analyzed using content analysis method. Result : The attributes of recovery state from psychiatric disability were categorized into 12 hierarchies in order of `maintain job functioning`(12.63%), `symptom alleviation`(12.11%), `treatment compliance`(10.52%), `insight formation`(10.52%), `maintain ADL`(10.00%), `maintain satisfied interpersonal relationship`(9.47%), `independent role performance`(8.95%), `improvement in social functioning`(8.42%), `regain ego function`(6.32%), `symptom management ability`(6.32%), `maintain family relationship and family life`(3.68), `returning to function state before ill`(2.63). Conclusion : we can assume the psychiatric mental health professional` recovery views and criteria from the psychiatric disability and can compare and figure out similarities and differences between professional`s and patient`s view points. It may help for professionals and patients to set agreeable ideas of recovery concept, clear treatment goals and expectations along the recovery process. Finally, we suggested further repeated study developing a recovery state assessment tool for psychiatrically mentally ill patients in community settings. The recovery perceptions of the patients and the family suggest is also needed to be explored.
