본 연구는 넓은 도시공원면적을 확보하여 세계적인 전원도시로 알려져 있는 뉴질랜드의 크라이스트처치를 대상으로 도시공원의 확보 및 조성과정과 분포특성을 알아보고, 공원이용자들의 행태를 분석함으로써 공원의 기능과 역할을 점검해 보고자 한 것이다. 공원의 확보와 조성과정에는 개발이 도시환경에 미치는 악영향을 상쇄하거나 완화하기 위해 개발업자로 하여금 개발면적을 기준으로 일정량의 토지나 돈을 공원조성을 위해 기부토록 하는 공원기부의 법령과 자연자원 및 경관가치의 보전이라는 공원관리목표에 의한 것이다. 약 280여 사례의 공원 이용객의 행태를 추적 조사한 결과 도심부의 공원은 다양한 기능을 수행하고 있었다. 공원평균체류시간은 1시간 이내였으며 이는 시간적 제한이나 체력과 관련이 있으며, 대부분의 이용객은 시각적인 볼거리가 많은 이동경로를 선호하였다. 또한 볼거리가 많고 교육적인 공간이라 할지라도 폐쇄적인 공간보다는 개방적인 공간을 더 선호하는 경향을 보였다.

In this study, I investigate how city parks have been created and what are some characteristics of the distribution of city parks in Christchurch. And I survey utilizing behavior of park visitors to identify what functions of parks are loved by park visitors. Now there are over 700 parks in Christchurch. These many parks have been created by Reserve Contribution Rationle that is to obtain financial contribution from subdivisions and developments to offset or mitigate adverse effects, including the impacts of development on open space. The formulae for calculating Reserve Contribution varies with residential or commercial development. The Creating of parks is closely related to park management goal, that is conservation of nature. To ensure scenic and ecological values many parks have been created around riverbanks and wetland. We can find it through distribution map of parks. The results of survey about behavior pattern of around 200 park users are following; Many residents used Botanic Garden by passage way to city center. It takes 10-15 minutes. This is very important role to mitigate traffic congestion and parking problem of city center. Generally many park visitors spend not more than 1 hour. This is based on human’s physical strength. Botanic Garden as a oasis of CBD has many functions. It is pathway, sightseeing and refreshment place, jogging route, sunbath place, meeting place, training place of play and some event, reading place, observation of ducks and seagulls, etc.
