Translation takes a key role in influx of foreign civilization and culture. In enlightenment era korean intellectuals considered translation as a important way of importing modern civilization. In this essay I focused on the thoughts related to translation of newspapers issued in enlightenment era, especially 77k Korean Daily News(대한매일신보). The morern media such as newspapers and journals pay much attention to korean language. The discovery of nation language has relation to modem nation-building project and to educating people. And the use of nation language meant growth of nation-independent spirit. Intellectuals thought that the translation of the books in foreign language is more important than any another things in the era full of crises. Though the study on translation in enlightenment era is very important, it is not easy to see writings about the thoughts related to translation in this era. Accordingly I using positive method tried to show the facts concretely about translation and translation-theory in this era.
