이 연구는 대통령 연설문을 대상으로 경어법의 쓰임을 분석함으로써 대통령이 다른 사람을 어떻게 대우하고 있으며, 그 배경에는 어떤 언어 사용 전략이 작용하는지를 해석하고자 하였다. 대통령의 경어법 사용에는 일반인과 다른 특성이 있으리라 짐작되며, 나아가 대톨영의 힘과 권위를 드러내기 위한 여러 가지 전략이 동원될 것으로 생각된다. 이 연구에서 분석한 자료는 김대중 대통령이 `국민의 정부` 시기에 각종 외교 행사에서 읽은 연설문 90여 편이다. 자료 분석 및 해석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대통령은 다른 나라의 국가 원수들에게 다양한 문법적·어휘적 경어법 형식을 동원하여 높이 대우하였다. 둘째, 대통령은 대상 인물의 지위에 따라 적절하게 높임의 정도를 조절하여 경어법을 사용하였다. 셋째, 대통령은 국가 원수나 그 부부에게는 높여 대우하였지만 전체 국민에게는 높임 형식을 거의 사용하지 않았다. 넷째, 대통령은 다른 사람을 높이면서도 자기를 낮추지 않거나 때로는 스스로를 높이는 전략을 동원하였다. 대통령의 이러한 경어법 사용은 일반 국어 화자들의 용법과 다른 점이 있었고, 대통령의 힘과 권위를 살리기 위한 목적에서 나온 전략적 용법도 있었다.

This paper analyzes the use of honorifics that appear on President`s speech. We try to examine concretely how President treats other person. And we wish to find President`s linguistic strategies. It is guessed that President`s honorific use differs with ordinary people`s usage. We think that President uses various linguistic strategies to show his own power and authority. Data that we analyze in this study is about speech 90 that President Kim Dae-jung read in various diplomacy events in the period of `People`s government`. The result of analyzing data is as the followings. First, President used various honorifics to Presidents or prime ministers of the other countries. Second, President controlled the grade of treatment with respect suitably depending on other person`s position. Third, President treated country summit or the couple with great respect but he hardly use respect form to civilian. Fourth, President used strategies that he did not treat himself with humble form when he treated other person with the greatest respect. Also, he often treated himself with respect These honorifics that President uses differ with the way of using of general Korean speakers. It is strategic usage that came from in purpose to make the most of President`s power and authority.
