Translations and studies of French philosophy in Korea had beginned in 1930s. But the current philosophy at that time was Marxism. French studies had been rare. In this paper, I tried to examine the translations and studies of Descartes, enligntenment, and Bergson. Park Honggyu`s translation of Descartes` Discours de la Methode is perhaps the first translation of French philosophy text in Korea. And some philosophers, especially the buddist philosophers, had investigated the philosophy of Descartes. Among them, Chel Ah`s study is the most high-quality analysis of the philosophy of Descartes. Not to say of exact analysis, Chel Ah critisizes it in some respects. Chel Ah`s criticism of Descartes is concentrated mostly on his idealistic position. The special magazine of Spinoza includes the papers of Lee Chongwoo, Ahn Hosang, Lee Kwanyong. These papers are limited in introductory studies. Kim Moonjip`s study of La Mettrie and Ok Chenseng`s study of Saint-Simon are very interesting in their themes, assertions, and implications. Perhaps these papers are most representative studies of this time in the field of French studies. Unfortunately, Shin Namchol`s study of Bergson includes some mispoints of him. Shin Namchol`s very delicate and sympathetic study understands Bergson as idealistic and existential thinker, missing his involvement in scientific contexts and his main theme of biophilosophy. This represents the missing link between enlightenment and Bergson. Bergson is a two-faced philospher who continued scientific regard on the world of enlightenment and romantic depassement of modern mechanism. The one-sided understanding of Bergson is continued at this time.
