촛불시위는 붉은 악마, 노사모 활동과 더불어 2002년에 일어난 고유하고 특이한 ‘한국 현상’이며, 미군 장갑차에 의해 죽음을 당한 여중생 효순이, 미선이에 대한 애 도가 집중력을 발휘하여 드러난 현상이다. 촛불시위의 주체는 지식인이라기보다는 사회문제나 민족정신에 그다지 관심이 없어 보이는 온라인 상의 네티즌이다. 실체가 불분명한 네티즌이 오프라인으로 진출한 획기적 사건이면서, 이로 인해 ‘행동하는 네티즌’, ‘실천하는 네티즌’이라는 역설적 신조어가 생겨나게 한 것이 촛불시위이다. 네티즌은 정치적 문제나 고통 받는 타인에게 관심이 없고 그래서 지식인과 대비되는 대중의 특징을 견지하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이들은 오히려 촛불시위를 통해 대 규모 정치시위를 주도하고, 동등한 한미관계, 자주적 한미관계, 전쟁반대 등과 같은 정 치적 발상들을 제시한다. 이 글에서는 이런 현상이 왜 일어나게 되었는지? 그리고 그 들을 그런 집단행동으로 이끌고 간 내적 동력은 무엇인지?를 밝히고자 한다. 네티즌은 원자적 개인이면서 다중 자아적 모습을 지니지만 동시에 관계적이고 공동체적 개인의 가능성도 지닌다. 네티즌이 지닌 이런 이중성에는 그들을 촛불시위로 가시화시킨 집단적 동일성이 작용하고 있다. 집단적 동일성은 한민족으로서 공통의 삶의 현장 속에 있다는 데서 나타나는 무의식적 동일성이며 집단적 무의식의 발현이다. 무의식적 동일성의 실체는 민족적 자존심이며, 상처받은 자존심이 뿜어내는 분노와 울분 의 동일성이다. 이 동일성은 타인의 기본권이 침해당하는 것을 자신과 동등한 위치에서 바라보는 심정과 타인에 대한 인격적 존중을 기초로 한다. 인격적 권리에 대한 존중과 권리가 침해당했다는 의식은 원자화된 개인들을 비판적 태도로 몰아가는 힘이며, 분노와 울분을 야기하는 집단적 의식 및 무의식적 동일성과 한데 어우러져서 공동체적 힘으로 나타난다.

The Demonstration through the Candle Light(CLD) is the Korean special Phenomenon. The CLD means the Grief for death of Middle-school girl pupils who were murdered by the American Soldiers who are staying in South Korea. The CLD`s subject is not about intellectualist(elite) but about netizens who are not interested in the social problems and the national spirits. But the latter leads the CLD that corresponds to a large scale of the political demonstration. Moreover they claim the Korean-American equal relation, independent relation, and war-opposition. What brings this phenomenon? What is the internal driving force that makes them carry out the CLD? Netizen has the two fold Self and futhermore multiple Self. The former has a concern not only about atomic individual but also relational individual. The relational individual lives in the community. Therefore s/he bears the group identity(collective homogeneity) in mind. The group identity results from the national consciousness and the national self-respect. To be sure, the national consciousness takes the form of unconscious identity and collective unconsciousness. Korea is anxious to keep his national self-respect. But netizen is also anxious to keep his legal rights and intelienable rights. Collective unconsciousness and legal rights are important points.
