코헨은 기능적 연관의 관점에서 생산관계가 생산력에 대해 지니는 효과를 통해 생산력을 설명한다. 이는 발전명제와 생산력 우선성 명제와 맥을 같이 한다. 이 명제들의 이론적 기초는 그의 생산력 개념이다. 그는 생산력을 정의하면서, 관계 개념을 일체 배제한다. 그가 말하는 생산력은 생산성과 동일한 것으로, 생산성을 담지한 대상, 즉 노 동 능력과 생산 수단 그 자체이다. 그는 노동자와 생산 수단의 결합 혹은 관계는 생산력과는 무관하다고 본다. 그러나 노동 능력과 생산 수단은 그 자체 생산력은 아니다. 생산 수단과 노동력은 그 자체로 결합되지 않는다. 노동 능력은 그 소유자가 있어야 발휘되는 한에서, 그리고 노동 능력의 소유자가 비노동자가 결합되는 한에서 양자는 결합된다. 따라서 노동력이 아니라, 노동자와 생산 수단은 노동자와 비노동자의 관계에 기초해서 결합한다. 이러 한 결합의 기초는 이들의 사회적, 구조적 지위로부터 나오는 그들의 상호 관계이다. 따라서 상호 작용이 양상이 달라지면, 이 결합의 양상도 달라진다. 그리고 그들의 상호 작용이 사회의 기초인 물질적 영역을 재생산한다는 의미에서 그것은 구조적 상호 작용 이 된다. 이제 생산력은 구조적 상호 작용에 에 기초한 노동 요소들의 사회적 결합 방 식 혹은 구조적 상호 작용에 기초한 노동 요소들의 특정한 관계 맺음의 방식으로 규정 할 수 있다.

And the basis of this combinations are their relations attributed to their social, structural potions. Futhermore because their interactions reproduce material world, those becomes structural interactions. Now forces of production can be defined the modes of social combinations of labor elements that is based on the structural interactions, or modes of specific relating of labor elements that is based on the structural interactions.
