The educational objectives of Korean language program for foreigners

The Korean language programs for foreigners and Korean students from overseas are being actively performed in and outside Korea through lots of educational institutions. For this purpose, various types of textbooks or guide books are currently available in the market. The point we should pay attention to is that the sandpoint from which the authors establish the educational objectives will have large impact on the learning achievement of the students. In general, the educational objectives can be classified into two categories; general objectives which are somewhat abstract and comprehensive, and specific objectives which are to the point and explicit ones. The general objectives of Korean language program for foreigners include the understanding of the Korean cluture and societies based on a effective learning of Korean language. In the meantime, the specific objectives of Korean language program for foreigners, which can be understood in the some context of instructional objectives or teaching points of learning points, very according to the specific purposes of each class. This article is closely related to and focuses on the concept of "learning points" which entails the students` proactive learning abilities. That`s because learning points are more meaningful when their relevance are proven by the students` actual behaviors. Furthermore, it`s much more important to help learners motivate themselves by making them understand what they really have to learn form the program or class. Nonetheless, among the Korean language books for foreigners prevailing in the market now, only a few are showing their specific objectives. In this article, I classified and scrutinized the objectives from the standpoint of their contexts, functions and fields. In Korean language program for foreigners, the relevant and practical educational objectives should be established through more careful studies and examinations on the characteristics and backgrounds of the learners, and there fore leading to the development of the contexts and learning programs.
