Hoshu Amenomori is known as a pioneer of Korean language education. He served Lord Soh of the Tsushima Clan and dedicated his life to Korean education. The preface and the explanatory notes of Zenichi Doujin(1729) let us know how Hoshu Amenoori thought about foreign language teaching. The preface show that he made the study book with a step by step approach. It begins with an introduction of Korean script and pronunciation, and contains the readings of words and phrases. He created a study book for students to learn about Korean spiritual culture, as well as a textbook designed to teach daily conversation. Zenichi Doujin was compiled as the third step of educational material and only this remains today. In the explanatory notes of this book, we can find a clear explanation about Hoshu Amenomori`s ideas on language teaching. He points out that there are a lot of disagreements between the phonograrn and pronunciation in Korea, He thus elaborated on ways to teach them. He draws attention to the problems inphonetic teaching such as the difference between plain sound, aspirated sound and foreed sound by picking out some adequate example sentence containing homoyms that are added intentionally. Moreover, he explains the necessity of careful learning by giving examples of the dialectical difference the Japanese accent. He insists that even Japanese pronunciation is not easy to distinguish, and that the recognize. He emphasizes the importance of teaching by a native speaker. He also discusses the importance of early education in Korea, and that people should learn the language of Seoul by people native to Seoul. According to the standpoint of both present theory and the ongoing edcuation of the Korean language to the Japanese people, the language teaching theory by Hoshu Amenomori is not outdated. It is worthy of remark that Hoshu Amenomori had presented such a theory on foreign language teaching in the seventeenth century.
