This study is focused on linguistic aspects of Honbul. Its purpose is to examine how narration structures and linguistic strategies and linguistic strategies are correlated with each other. They say that Honbul is treasure-house of our mother tongue. This study shows what the concrete basis of the above belief is. The belief proves true because Honbul has abundant vocabulary and excellent realistic description and narrative manners. The writer utilizes such descriptive methods as the levels of sounds, sentences, and expressions. The levels of sounds referring to sounds and phonemes go far toward musicality of Honbul. They are accomplished through prolongation of sounds. Linguistic strategies for the ones of sentences are represented through structures of sentences. Characters` psychologically complicated states of mind are expressed by making sentences complex ones. Narration is developed dynamically by using suitable combination of simple and complex sentences. The selective use of two kinds of sentences is made on the basis of personalities of characters. The sentences tend to become long by adding plenty of modifiers. The levels of linguistic expression make the work sensible and imageable. They reflect the writer`s intention and her recognition attitude toward things. Her great originality is expressed through them. Frequent insertion and enumeration of episodes may be considered to be bad points, but they make the sentences vivid through their sensibility and imageability. That leads to lyricism of the work. Narration structures of Honbul deal with love affairs of Gangmo and Gangsil, confrontation of social status of Yangban and lowly people, and Gangtae`s thought problems. The spaces of place, time, culture, and thought foum the focus of spaces in Honbul. The spaces of place are Namwon, Jeonju in Korea, and Bongcheon in China. The ones of time are periods of Baekje, post-Baekje, Barhae, and Chosun. The spaces of culture and art are folk ballads, Muga, Chinese poetry, sijos, and letters. The ones of thought and art are YinYang and five elements, the Four Devas, marriage ceremonies, and memorial ceremonies. The appropriate combination of narration structures and linguistic strategies contribute to make Honbul lyrical, visual, and imageable.
