Psychiatric-mental health nursing is the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual or potential mental health problems. Psychiatric-mental health nursing is a specialized area of nursing practice, employing theories of human behavior as its science and purposeful use of self as its art. Psychiatric-mental health nurses deliver primary mental health care. Psychiatric-mental health nursing is necessarily holistic and considers the needs and strengths of the whole person, the family and the community. Psychiatric-mental health registered nurses are qualified for speciality practice at two levels-basic and advanced. These levels are differentiated by educational preparation, professional experience, type of practice, and certification. Psychiatric-mental health registered nurse is a licensed R.N. who has a baccalaureate degree in nursing demonstrated clinical skills within the speciality. The designation, psychiatric mental health nurses, applies to those nurses who are certified(R.N., C.) of basic level certification within the speciality and who meet the professions standards of knowledge and experience. Psychiatric-mental health Advanced Practice Registered Nurse(APRN) is a licensed R.N. who is educationally prepared at the master`s level, at a minimum, and is nationally certified as a clinical specialist in psychiatric mental health nursing. The has the ability to apply knowledge, skills and experience autonomously to complex mental health problems. The prepared psychiatric mental health nurse in advanced practice has both a master`s degree in nursing and a doctorate(DN. SC., Ph. D.) in nursing or a related field. Anyway, the psychiatric-mental health nurses in advanced practice has been called a clinical nurses in advanced practice ha been called a clinical nurse specialist(CNS). The term advanced practice registered nurse(inclusive of the CNS, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, nurse practitioner) has emerged in response to the need for uniform titling with the nursing profession. The psychiatric-mental health advanced practice nurse is referred to as a certified specialist(R.N., C.S.) Subspecialization within psychiatric-mental health nursing may be categorize according to a developmental period(child and adolescent, adult, geriatric), a specific mental/ emotional disorder(addition, depression, chr. mental illness), a particular practice focus(community, group, couple, family, individuals), and specific role of function(psychiatric consultation liaison). Clinical practice settings of psychiatric-mental health nursing are very various because of its scope.
