Family Environment Perceptions between the Schizophrenic Families and the Normal Families

This study was carried out to provide the basic data for efficient family nursing of schizophrenic families through the investigation of the difference on perception of family environment between schizophrenic families and normal families. The subject were family members of schizophrenics who had been treated in seven psychiatric clinics and hospitals located in Pusan and Kyungsangnam-do and the control group were residents who lived in Pusan and had no history of psychiatric illness. Interviews methods were used to investigate the difference of perception on family environment between two groups. All of the data were analyzed using SPSS. The results were summerized as follows. ; 1. General characteristics Family shape and economic supporter were significantly different, however, in items including sex, age, education, religion, economic status, number of family living together, length of marriage and position within the family were not different between two groups. 2. Family Environment Scale Perception score on relationship of dimension was significantly low in schizophrenic family group, but that of personal growth and system maintenance dimensions was not different between two groups respectively. Among ten items of three dimensions, the scores of intellectual cultural orientation and active recreational orientation were significantly low, but the score of conflict was high in schizophrenic family group compared with normal control group. 3. Relation between general characteristics and perception scores at the level of three dimensions. At the level of relation maintenance dimension, general characteristics with high score of perception were family position, but that with low score of perception were sex(male, female), economic(high, middle, low), family shape(parent, parents), length of marriage(below 19 year, above 20 year), position in family(son, other), age(below 30, above 50), education(elementary, high school, university graduation), religion(Buddhism), occupation(sale/labour, housewife/no job), number of families living together(below5) and economic supporter(parents). At the level of personal growth dimension, general characteristics with high score of perception was high school graduates, but that with low score were male in sex, housewife/no job in occupation and over 6 numbers of family living together in schizophrenic family group compared with normal control group. At the level of system maintenance dimension, general characteristics with high score of perception were high economic status and parents/others in the position of family, but that with low score of perception were middle economic status and officer/manager in occupation in schizophrenic families.
