이 논문은 이태준의 장편 소설인 불멸의 함성을 플롯 고찰을 통해 작가의 지향성을 밝힌 글이다. 그 논의의 시작은 불멸의 함성이 통속소설인가 계몽소설인가 하는 부분에서부터이다. 플롯을 유형화한 방법론의 이태준이 자신의 소설론에서 밝히고 있는 소설의 유형론이며, `씨키는 소설`과 `쓰는 소설`이라는 유형화를 바탕으로 불멸의 함성의 프롯을 두 부류로 나누어 고찰했다. 즉 `씨기는 소설`의 통속성을 중심 플롯으로 한 고찰과 `쓰는 소설`의 계몽성을 중심으로 한 플롯의 고찰을 통해 논의가 진행되었다. 특히 본 논문은 불멸의 함성의 플롯 고찰을 통해 `씨키는 소설`로서의 통속성이 궁극적으로 `진정성`을 지향한다는 문제와 `쓰는 소설`로서의 계몽성 역시 궁극적인 지향은 민중과의 진정한 공감이라는 점을 제시함으로써 이 작품의 궁극적인 지향점은 바로 `진정성`의 추구라는 점을 밝힐 수 있었다. 이것은 또한 작가 이태준이 단편소설들을 통해 공통적으로 드러내고자 한 것이다. 그러므로 바로 작품의 면밀한 플롯 고찰을 통해 궁극적인 작가 욕망을 파악할 수 있으며 이것은 바로 한 작가의 이질적으로 보이는 두 경향의 작품인 단편과 장편 작품이 결국 하나의 굵은 맥락에서 움직이고 있었다는 것을 이해할 수 있게 해 준다. 그러므로 이러한 고찰을 통해 불멸의 함성의 두 플롯은 동일하게 `진정성`을 중심 욕망으로 움직이고 있고 이 욕망은 바로 작가 이태준의 지향성과 맥이 닿아 있다는 결론에 도출할 수 있다.

This study clarifies the writer`s intention of the long novel "Immortal Shout" written by Lee Tae-Jun, by investigating its plot. The question that the novel is a popular novel or not, namely, enlightenment novel is the starting point of this paper. We classify the types of plot as "the novel written by force" and "the novel written voluntarily", which are those classified already by the writer himself. That is, the discussion of this study is progressed through researching two plots, that of the popularity of "novel written by force" and that of the enlightenment of "the novel written voluntarily". In this novel, the popularity of "novel written by force" looks for "Sincerity" conclusively, and the enlightenment of "the novel written voluntarily" also does so by showing that the most important intention is a sympathy with the people. So, we could clarify the fact that the intention of this novel is the pursuit of "Sincerity". This is the intention which the writer Lee would represent all over his novels. So, we can understand the fact that the long novels and the short novels of the writer, which seem to be heterogenous each other, stand on the one axis. Conclusively, two plots of the novel `Immortal Shout" set up "Sincerity" as a main desire, and this desire is connected to the intention of the writer, Lee Tae-Jun.
