이 글에서는 노년기 삶에 대한 연구방법으로서 최근 학문적 관심과 적용이 급증하고 있는 생애사(life history) 방법 및 생애사 자료분석에 유용한 이론적 관점으로 생애과정 관점(Life course perspective)에 대해 소개하고, 한국노인의 삶을 이해하는데 적용가능성을 탐색하고자 하였다. 생애사 방법은 노인들의 과거 삶의 과정에서의 구체적 선택과 행동이 현재의 삶의 질 및 삶에 대한 해석에 어떻게 반영되고 있는지 이해하는데 유용한 연구방법인 것으로 주목받으면서, 최근 서구 및 일본의 노년학 분야에서 그 적용이 급증하고 있는 연구방법이다. 반면 한국에는 노년학 연구방법으로서의 생애사 연구 및 이론적 분석틀로서 생애과정 관점에 대한 소개조차 체계적으로 이루어 지지 않은 상태이다. 이러한 국내연구의 제한점에 주목하여 이 글에서는 생애사 방법의 적용에 있어 중요한 몇가지 방법론적 이슈들과 노년기 현재의 삶을 이해하는데 있어서 생애사 자료가 어떻게 활용될 수 있는가 제시해 보았다 나아가서 생애사 방법을 적용하여 수행된 연구의 예를 통하여 노인들이 과거에 경험 전환점적 사건의 경험이 아직도 진행형의 형태로 현재 살의 질에 영향을 미치고 있음을 보여줌으로서, 노년기 삶의 질에 대한 심층적 이해를 위해서 생애과정 전체의 맥락에서 노인들의 삶을 접근해야할 필요성 및 생애사적 연구의 유용성을 제시하였다.
The purpose of this study is to discuss the main characteristics of life history method as a useful methodological tool for studying the lives of old people. With the emergence of a life course perspective, there has been increased use of life history method in the area of gerontology in Japan and western countries, as researchers in the field became more aware of the importance of examining the relationship between socio-historical context, individual subjectivity and lived experience of old people. Yet, there are few studies applying the life history method for studying the lives of old people in Korea. In this study, employing the example from our own research, the ways in which life history method can be utilized to enhance the understanding the lives of Korean elderly are illustrated. Also, the key assumptions and characteristics of life course perspective as a conceptual means analyzing life history materials are discussed. It was shown that the quality of life and adaptation in later life reflect the ways in which elderly interpret their past experience-life events , transitions, and choices the elderly people make -in order to maintain a sense of personal coherence and continuity over time. In this regard, it was argued that the life history represents an exemplary method for studying how presently remembered past, experienced present, and anticipated future provide elderly with a continuing sense of personal integrity.
