This paper examines development and characteristics of the urban structure of Daejeon metropolitan area focusing on the emergence of a new retail center. The city has been transformed from a single-center to a bicenter city owing to the national policy for the decentralization of the capital region. Since the distribution market open in 1996, the new center has attracted a lot of department stores and large-scale discount stores, while the old center has become more specialized in retailing for fashion items. As a result, the new center(Dunsan District) originally planned as an administration district has significantly heightened its centrality as a retail center. Comparing two centers by retail distribution pattern reveals different positions in the retail hierarchy.
