1900년대는 도가 및 제자철학 원전이 우리말로 번역되기 시작한 시기였고, 1970년대는 양적 팽창의 시기였다. 60년대를 통틀어 17종에 불과하던 번역서는 70년대에 이르러 74종으로 급격하게 늘어나는데, 그 가장 중요한 원인은 출판사 주도의 대대적 기획물 즉 전집류와 문고본의 대량출판과 유통 때문이었다. 이런 경향은 1984년 이전까지 계속 되었다. 1984년에 이르러 도가 및 제자철학 원전 번역에 있어 질적 변화가 일어나기 시작하였다. 즉 출판의 형태가 대형 전집류에서 개별적 단행본으로, 출판사의 기획에서 역자 중심의 번역서로 외적˙내적 변화가 일어나기 시작한 것이다. 이런 질적 변화는 1550년대의 질적 성장을 위한 밑거름이 되었다. 1550년대에는 연구자를 위한, 연구자에 의한 번역서가 출현하였고, 2000년대에 이르러서 도가 및 제자철학 원전 번역 양상은 학계의 현황과 연구 성과를 신속하고 다양하게 반영하는 쪽으로 바뀌어가고 있는 추세에 있다. 이러한 추세는 분명히 도가 및 제자철학이 원전의 번역 과정을 겪으면서 서서히 근대라는 옷으로 갈아입는 과정으로 읽힌다. 도가 및 제자철학 원전 번역의 40여년 역사에서 다음과 같은 몇 가지 의미 있는 흐름을 읽어낼 수 있다. 첫째, 출판사에 의한 기획에서 독자적 번역으로, 전집에서 단행본으로 바뀌어 왔다. 둘째, 초역(抄譯)이나 축쇄역에서 완역으로 바뀌어왔다. 셋째, 중복 출판이 줄어들거나 완전히 사라졌다. 이는 지적 재산권 문제와 관련이 있다. 넷째, 대상 독자에 따른 번역의 형태가 다양화되었고 특히 연구자를 위한 번역이 늘어가고 있다. 다섯째, 해당 원전과 관련된 방면의 전문 연구자가 직접 번역한 번역서가 늘어가고 있다. 여섯째, 그 동안 이룩한 국내의 학문적 죽적은 물론 외국의 학문적 죽적이 번역에 반영되기시작하였고 학계의 연구 풍토도 반영되기 시작하였다. 일곱째, 1인당 번역량이 감소하였다. 이는 전문 연구자를 포함한 다양하고 많은 사람들이 번역에 참여하고 있기 때문이기도 하고, 한 번 번역한 책을 여기저기 출판사와 판형을 바꿔 출판하던 중복출판의 악습이 사라졌기 때문이기도 하다. 여덟째, 번역의 질적인 면에서 볼 때 문어체에서 구어체로의 변화 양상이 뚜렷하다. 아직도 문어체, 옛 말투, 한문 번역어투 등을 고집하고 있는 번역서가 적지 않지만, 옛 말투나 문어투에서 현재 우리가 쓰는 일상어투로 바뀌어가는 것이 대체적인 경향이다.

Study with the past philosophy is one of the essential way to start learning philosophy. And translation does such an important role for learning history of philosophy and studing philosophical legacy. Because we have very short history for studing philosophy in Korean, therefore most of philosophical legacies that we have to research and study are in foreign languages including Chinese characters. The question how the Oriental Philosophy(including the Taoism and the Various Philosophical Schools) have modernized this society or have had what an effect on the modern age is somewhat hasty. Actually, the Oriental Philosophy have been influenced by modernization rather than have influenced modernization last one century. It had to change itself not to cling to traditional form. Exactly the Oriental Philosophy had to put aside sth., change sth., assent sth. to be studied and be discussed like the other `fields`. Translating the original text was the first step for these. In 1960s, the original texts for the Taoism and the Various Philosophical Schools started to be translated in Korean. 1970s were the age of expansion in quantity. Translated books became 74 sorts in 1970s from 17 sorts in 1960s. That`s because of the enormous publication and distribution of publisher leading collections. This tendency lasts till 1984. In 1984, there were changes in quality on translation for the Taoism and the Various Philosophical Schools. There were internal & external changes in publication - from collections to separate volumes, from publisher leading system to translater leading system. These changes in quality became a foundation for 1990s growth in quality. In 1990s, many translated books for investigator, by investigator appeared. In 2000s, tendency of the translation of the Taoism and the Various Philosophical Schools is that many translated books reflect the present state and the study results of the academic world variously as well as promptly. We can read this tendency as gradual changing for the Taoism and the Various Philosophical Schools to modernization through translating the original text. We can read some important current in 40 years history in translating the original text of the Taoism and the Various Philosophical Schools as follows. 1st, Translation have been changed from the form of collections to separate volumes, from publisher leading system to translater leading system. 2nd, It has been changed from the abridged translation to complete translation. 3rd, Duplicate publications have been decreased or disappeared. It is connected with intellectual property. 4th, Translation form became various according to readers. Especially translations for researchers have been expanding. 5th, Translated books which are translated by professional researcher who are associated with the very original text have been expanding. 6th, Academical accumulations which have been achieved in the world as well as in Korea started to be reflected, and the features of the academical world started to be reflected. 7th, The quantity of translation per a person has been decreased. It`s because many people (including professional researchers) are participating in translation. And because the bad custom of duplicate publication have been disappeared. 8th, As an aspect of quality in translation, we can see the notable change from the form of written language to the form of spoken language. Though so many books cling to written language, ancient language, Chinese writing translating form, however, the trend is to support the modem language form from the ancient language or written language form.
