이 논문에서는 서사민요 중 외간남자와 여자의 관계를 다루고 있는 유형을 대상으로 그 구조적 특성과 의미를 살펴보았다. ?외간남자-여자? 관계 서사민요에는 <외간남자의 옷이 찢기자 꿰매주는 여자>, <외간남자와 정을 통하다 들킨 여자>, <주머니를 걸어놓고 남자 유혹하는 처녀>, <중이 유혹하나 거절하는 여자>, <중에게 시주한 뒤 쫓겨나는 여자>, <장사가 성기를 팔자 이를 사는 과부>, <장사가 자고간 뒤 그리워하는 과부> 등 일곱 가지 유형이 있다. 혼외 남녀 관계를 금기시하고 있는 전통 사회에서 이들 관계를 다루고 있는 서사 민요가 이만큼 다양한 유형으로 전승될 뿐만 아니라 이들 서사민요가 담당층의 성에 대한 솔직한 욕구와 기대를 거리낌 없이 구체적으로 형상화해내고 있음은 매우 획기적이다. 이는 사회적 규범과 금기에도 불구하고 평민 특히 서사민요의 주 담당층인 평민 여성들은 그들의 본능과 욕구를 자연스럽게 표출하고 노래하였음을 보여준다. 이들 유형은 대부분 결말을 제시하지 않는 양면복합형이나 좌절에 이르는 좌절우위형의 구조적 특성을 나타내는데, 이는 외간남자와 여자의 관계가 결코 행복한 결말에 이룰 수 없는 사회적 현실과 이러한 현실과 금기를 그대로 수용하지 않는 서사민요 담당층의 인식을 함께 보여준다. `외간남자-여자` 관계 서사민요는 외간남자와 여자 간에 이루어지는 일상적인 소재를 꿈이나 환상 등에 의해 변형하지 않고 사실적으로 그려냄으로써, 전통사회에서의 외간남자와 여자 사이에 놓여 있는 현실과 이러한 현실 속에서 민요의 담당층들이 갖고 있던 솔직한 내면을 들여다보게 한다는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다.

This paper concerns about the structural characteristics and meaning of folk ballads about the extramarital affair. Folk ballads about the extramarital affair consists of seven types. (1) The woman who sew a paramour`s pants. (2) The woman who detected in affair by her husband. (3) The girl who seduce a man. (4) The girl who reject a monk. (5) The girl who is thrown out of house because of offering to a monk. (6) The widow who buy a penis from a peddler. (7) The widow who miss a peddler. The structure can be classified with three sub- types: the first is the type of desire completion, the second is the type of demand frustration, and the last is the mixed type. Most of folk ballads about the extramarital affair belong to the type of demand frustration and the mixed type, i.e. a couple die or separated. Most of folk ballads about the extramarital affair are closed with the unhappy ending, meanwhile only The widow who buy a penis from a peddler is closed with the happy ending. This means that it is not easy for the lovers in the extramarital relationships in the traditional society to be happy. This shows the reality of life and a person`s spiritlessness confronting with the reality in the traditional society. People who create and transmit folk ballads about the extramarital affair express their consciousness through them as follows. 1) They have the open attitude at the extramarital relationships cannot be true. 2) They express and criticize a traditional system of marriage. 3) Women reject the sexual violation. Folk ballads about an extramarital affair is composed of a dramatic narrative story and contains the frankness in people`s consciousness. They could, therefore, be got very important valuation in literal estimation.
