젠더적 관점으로 `고전` 텍스트를 다루는 작업은 여성의 문화적 지위에 대한 역사적 이해가 선행되어야 하고, `문학`에 대한 당대적 개념이나 인식이 현재와는 현저히 달랐던 과거의 관점에 대한 `시선`과 `입장`을 전제로 성립한다는 점에서 문학 연구자로 하여금 문학과 문학사에 대한 근본적 문제제기를 하도록 요청한다. 젠더 비평의 방법론이 분석적 도구로서의 갖는 유용성은 주변화된 형태로 서술되거나 중심인물의 서사를 전개시키기 위해 부수적으로 동원된 인물들, 소수자들이 텍스트 내에 배치되는 방식에 미친 사회, 역사적 동인들을 적극적으로 규명하는 작업을 수반한다는 점에서 텍스트 분석의 영역을 확대한다는 의미를 포괄한다. 이러한 작업은 필연적으로 문학의 개념에 대한 재정의와 문학사 기술의 문제에 관한 근본적인 문제제기에서 비롯된다는 점에서 비평 행위와 그것의 실천적 장에 관한 재정의를 수반하게 된다. 젠더 비평의 과정은 텍스트를 작가나 편저자, 그리고 향유층의 `의도`와 `반응`대로 읽지 않는다는 점에서, 즉 그들과는 다른 감수성과 판단으로 독해하고, 이를 통해 문학이 당대 문화에서 갖는 `위치`를 분별해 내고, 문학 자체의 역사적 변천 과정에 관해 성찰한다는 점에서 `메타 비평`의 영역을 점유한다. 젠더 비평적 방법은 고전 텍스트에서 타자화된 시선의 존재 형태와 타자화하는 문화적 맥락과 이데올로기적 지형을 판독해 냄으로써, 궁극적으로는 `문학-문화`, `상상-이데올로기`의 관계가 현대적으로 재생산 되는 방향에 대한 반성의 가능성을 제시해 준다. 그 과정에서 문학사에서 배제된 `여성 문학`의 자료를 발굴하거나 그 안에 담긴 `여성성`의 의미를 해석하는 것은 `고전`의 영역을 재편하는 문학사적 기술의 문제로 제한되지 않으며, 궁극적으로는 `여성성`의 가치 생산을 통해 삶의 조건과 역사에 대한 사색의 길을 개방한다는 의미를 확보한다. 젠더적 관점에서 문학사를 독해하는 데 필요한 것은 서구적 자료에 근간하여 성립한 이론에 의존하는 대신 한국문학사 자료를 바탕으로 여성적 표상 체계의 지형도를 재구하는 작업일 것이며, 문학사에서 소외된 여성 작품을 소개하는 데서 나아가 그것을 `작품`으로 성립시키는 `작가적 역량`과 가치들에 대한 성찰을 수반해야 한다는 점이다. 이와 아울러 은폐되거나 억압된, 혹은 타자화되어 존재하는 `여성적 목소리`의 의미를 적극적으로 독해함으로써, `고전`의 영역을 창조적으로 갱신하는 데 기여해야 하는 것이다.

Gender critics as a reading method of Korean classical literature requires for the scholastic readers` historical understanding about females` cultural status and their own meta-critical view point about the `Literature`. Gender critics produces essential values in the process of analyzing the classical literary works; to try to find the minority`s cultural status like females or strangers portrayed in the literary texts and to try to determine the historical and social causes which are influenced on the literary narratives about the minority and subaltern`s culture. Such process essentially demands for redefinition about the meaning of critics and the methodological validity of some descriptive remises on the literary history. Gender critics essentially includes the meta-critical process closely connected with itself in a view of not reading texts according to the contemporary writers`, editor`s and readers` taste, intention and response; reading literary works in a view of gender critics means that the readers understand the texts differently from the contemporary ones because of the historical distance. Such a critical way of reading sheds light on the other`s point of view and understanding about it`s cultural formation process portrayed in the literary works, by doing so it suggests some new critical reflection to the modern literary paradigm about the relationship between `literature-culture`, and `imagination-ideology` and their reproduction process. Writing a literary history in a view of gender critics leads the way of thought about the conditions of life and concept of history itself rather than is limited in an introduction of hided new data and interpretation of the concealed meaning of the feminity. In these aspects, it should be reformed the topographical map of feminity icon, and try to contrive the concepts about the writers and their own traits which make it possible to recognize females` writings as literary works. Such work will contribute to create the new classical paradigm, and renew the concept of classical cannon.
