이 글에서는 사상사적 발전 과정을 통하여 체용 개념의 다양한 변천을 살펴보았다. 중국철학에서 체와 용은 초기에는 각기 독립적으로 쓰이다가, 철학적 개념으로 쓰이기 시작한 것은 왕필의 현학부터이다. 체용 개념은 인도 불교와 중국 현학의 상호 관계에서 배태되었다고 볼 수 있다. 체용 개념의 불교적 이해는 크게 삼론종-『대승기신론』-천태, 화엄종-선종이 이어지며 체와 용을 하나로 합일시켜 보는 `체용일여(體用一如)`적인 논리와, 체와 용을 이원적으로 분명히 구분한 법상종의 `체용별론(體用別論)`적인 논리로 나누어서 발전되었다. 그리고 이러한 체용의 불교적 이해는 그대로 유학, 즉 성리학과 양명학에 영향을 미쳤는데, 불교의 두 가지 논리 중 특히 중국 불교의 `체용일여`의 논리가 이어졌음을 알 수 있다. 유학은 체용의 불교적 이해를 그대로 받아들여 심통성정설과 치양지설 등 핵심적인 성리학 이론을 형성하는 데 활용하였던 것이다. 따라서 체용의 유학적 이해는 불교적 이해를 그대로 계승한 것이었다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 `체용` 개념은 한 개체의 다양성과 근원성을 등가로 보게 하는 철학적, 논리적 개념이다. 현대 사회의 문제들을 해결하기 위해서 반드시 필요한 근원적 핵심인 것이다.
The purpose of this paper is to observe the changes of `Ti Yong` (體用, Substance-Function) through the historical development of Chinese Philosophy. In the Chinese Philosophy, the concepts of Ti and Yong have been used independently until Wang Bi(王弼) used them as the philosophical concept of united form. The concept of Ti Yong originated in the internal connection between of Indian Buddhism(印度佛敎) and Chinese New-Taoism(玄學). The Buddhistic Understanding of Ti Yong developed two different ways. One is the logic that the substance and function are of one source(體用一如), and it has been developed through the process of the school of Three Treatises(三論宗)- Discource on the Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana(『大乘起信論』)- the school of the Celestial Platform(天台宗) and Flower Garland school(華嚴宗)- Dhyana Buddhism. Another is the logic that the substance and function are of seperated source(體用別論), and it has been developed through the process of the school of Marks-of-Existence school(法相宗). The Buddhistic Understanding of Ti Yong, especially the logic that the substance and function are of one source, was led to the Confucianistic Understanding of Ti Yong. Confucianism in Song and Ming periods accepted the Buddhistic Understanding of Ti Yong as it is, and used them to constitute the basic theory of Xing Li(性理學). For example, those are `the theory of the union of nature and emotion`(心統性情說) and `the theory of Chi Liangzhi`(致良知說). Therefore it can be told that the Confucianistic Understanding of Ti Yong succeeded the Buddhistic Understanding. The concepts of Ti Yong are the philosophical and logical ideas to make think that the diversity and the origin of a person have an equal value. I think that Ti Yong are the fundermental core to solve the problems in our times.
