이 글은 일제시대(특히 1920, 30년대)에 등장했던 `근대적 주체`를 그 시대에 출간된 소설들을 중심으로 살펴본다. 본격적인 윤리－정치적 논의 이전에 보다 대중적인 차원에서 등장했던 주체들을 발굴해내는 방식을 취한다. 그러나 이 험난한 시대에 아직 본격적이고 적극적인 주체들이 등장하기는 어려웠으며, 근대적 주체의 탄생보다는 차라리 유산(流産)이 여러 곳에서 발견된다. 이 글은 특히 근대적 주체의 탄생을 대(大)타자와의 관련 하에서 읽어내고자 한다. 여기에서 대타자란 가족이나 국가를 비롯해서 한 개인을 둘러싸고 있는 보편자 형식의 사회적 존재들을 뜻한다. 특히 일제시대라는 대타자에 대해 당대의 주체들이 취한 태도(Haltung)에 논의의 초점을 맞춘다. 이런 논의를 통해서 귀속되는 주체, 부유하는 주체, 투쟁하는 주체가 발견되었다. 귀속되는 주체는 대타자의 어느 한곳에 자리를 잡음으로써 자신의 주체성과 대타자 사이에서 발생하는 갈등을 해소하는 주체이다. 이에 비해서 부유하는 주체는 대타자 어디에서 자리를 잡지 못하고 떠도는 주체이다. 마지막으로 투쟁하는 주체는 스스로를 대타자의 이물질(異物質)로 만듦으로서 대타자의 변형을 위해 투쟁하는 주체이다.

This paper examines the novels that had been published in the age of Japanese empire, and that had treated "modern subjects" of 1920s and 1930s. Before examining the proper ethical-political problems, we have chosen the method that will make us reveal the subjects at the dimension of mass. But in this painful time it was not yet easy to appear the subjects in their proper meaning, and we have discovered in various places the abortion rather than birth of modern subjects. This paper has tried to read the birth of subject in relation of the Other. Here we use this word in the meaning of social entities taking the forms of universals around an individual. Especially in the era of Japanese empire, it had been important to focus on the Haltung(in its Heideggerian meaning) taken by the subjects at that era. From this reading we have discovered the three types of subjects, being attributed, floating, struggling. The subject being attributed to the Other is one that is given some place of the Other, floating upon the Other is a vagabond having no place at the Other, struggling is a subject that makes himself / herself a heterogeneous place in the Other and by that transforms it. This paper has examined the ways by which these three subjects were described by the novels, and the implications that the differences of those three subjects revealed.
