다학문적 정책분석은 사회과학자들의 적극적인 역할에 따라 세 가지의 전통을 만들어 왔으며, 이러한 전통은 자신만의 독특한 가치와 원칙을 강조하고 있다. 준실험설계에서는 경쟁가설과 타당성에 대한 위협요인들 때문에 완벽한 정확성이 없는 인과관계와 반증주의를 강조하며, 비용편익분석의 원리를 통한 합리적 의사결정 접근법에 있어서는 상대적 효율성을 극대화하기 위한 모든 가능한 설명들에 대한 완전한 검토를 중요시하며, 정책형성과정의 영향요인들과 구성요소들에 대한 분석에 있어서는 이들을 분석하는 다양한 관점들에 대한 지식들이 중요시되고 있다. 준실험설계에서 제기하는 인과관계와 합리적 의사결정 접근법은 조망적·회고적 정책분석의 장점을 취합한 통합적 정책분석을 통하여 상호 보완될 수 있다. 또한, 세 가지 전통의 상호보완적 관점에 있어서 실용적, 제거적 귀납법이 경쟁가설들의 인접범위를 추정하는데 사용될 수 있으며, 궁극적으로 잘못된 문제를 풀고 있는 제 3종 오류를 감소시키는데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

Multi-disciplinary policy analysis has developed its core concepts and methodologies by drawing on different traditions of research, theory, and practice. In quasi-experimental design, the investigation of policy causation is not perfect and falsification is called for. Rational approach of decision making originating in benefit-cost analysis calls for the analysis of comparative efficiencies by conducting with-and-without analyses of policies through comprehensive analyses. A third tradition calls for the use of multiple perspectives in the analysis of factors that influence the policymaking process and its component stages or functions. The policy causation in quasi-experimental design and rational approach of decision making can be complementary through a integrated policy analysis which seeks to incorporate all the methodological advantages of both prospective and retrospective policy analyses. In this complimentary view, rival hypotheses or threats to validity must be tested or reduced, where possible. Pragmatic eliminative induction in a complementary point of view can be used to estimate the proximal range of rival hypotheses and reduce a type Ⅲ error that solves a wrong problem in the integrated policy analysis, ultimately.
