성공적인 자기기만은 외부적으로는 비록 가상적이지만, 자아 내부로는 자기 자신에게 매우 실제적이며 사실적으로 여겨지므로 고도의 내적 일관성이 유지된다. 결국 자기기만을 통하여 상대에게 의도된 자기를 표출하는 효율성 또한 높아진다. 인간사회에서 행태적 꾸밈 현상은 도덕적 다원화 현상을 수반한다. 그래야만 자기표출의 성공도가 보장되기 때문이다. 적절한 행태적 꾸밈현상은 불특정 상대로 하여금 당장의 실질적인 이익을 제공하기보다는 미래의 희망적인 이익을 줄 것이라는 기대감을 산출하는 기능을 제공 한다. 나를 꾸미는 모종의 기만은 친구의 적군을 나의 적군으로 여겨주며, 친구의 우군을 나의 우군으로 여겨줌으로써 친구와 공감대 형성을 확대한다. 나아가 상대의 정체성과 무관하게 적군의 친구를 적군으로 만들며, 우군의 친구를 우군으로 만드는 확장된 생물학적 생존기술을 지향한다. 더 나아가 고급의 행태기만은 대의적 명분과 집단적 책무성을 강조함으로써 불특정 다수의 자발적 동조를 형성하려는 행태유형을 제공한다. 완벽하고 이상적인ideal 자기기만의 상황은 자기가 기만되어 있다는 사실을 전혀 모르는 경우이다. 그러나 이런 경우는 이상조건일 때만 가능하며, 실제의 인간사회에서는 불가능하다. 다만 비교적 성공적이거나 효율이 높은 자기기만인 경우, 그것이 아무리 성공적이라고 해도 자신의 기만적 행위를 인지하는 것이 상례이다. 문제는 자기기만을 자기가 인지하고 있는 경우라도, 자기가 자기 스스로에게 자기기만으로 유도하는 행위는 진화생물학적 적응의 산물이기도 하지만 환경적 영향에도 크게 기인한다. 이에 대한 다양한 진화론적 논거를 제시한다.
This paper draws on the problem whether the evolutionary theory of adaptation could explain how the psychological phenomenon of self-deception works. The successful self-deception is even imaginary phenomenon externally, but it can be kept with highly internal consistency since it is treated as very actual and real thing for myself. Self-deception is the process or fact of misleading ourselves to accept as true or valid what is false or invalid. Self-deception is a way we justify false beliefs to ourselves. Greenwald explains the self-deception through his concept "beneffectance", which is selectively perceived as responsible for desired, but not undesired, outcomes. Since then, evolutionary psychologists have, beyond the shadow of a doubt, interpreted the "self-deception" entirely as the theory of adaptation. According to the theory of adaptation, self-deceit is natural, that is, not only not pathological but positively beneficial to organism as they navigate their natural and social environments in the struggle for existence. On the contrary, in my article I sketched the another interpretations beyond theory of adaptation which had became a dominant interpretation. I conclude that self-deception may be not an adaptation, but a byproduct of human cognitive traits.
