A Study on the Appropriateness of Curricula in the Field of Speech Communication Education

This study aims to specify and suggest a solution for the problems in the field of speech communication education provided by the current curricula of Korean education. It also aims to provide what must be considered at the stage of establishment of educational contents for achieving the appropriateness. Educational contents are a specific expression of study goal and, therefore, must be chosen with good reflection upon the goal. Thus, the educational contents in the field of speech must be decided so that the learners may effectively acquire the knowledge needed to augment their speech capability. The speech- educational contents provided by the 7th Curricula of Korean Language Education are not regarded as suitable, because they were organized without any appropriateness and with no meticulous consideration of the basic principles to be followed in organizing study contents. The choice of speech communication educational contents should be based on a clear-cut evidence and a sufficient reflection of the characteristics of speech and speech communication education. Besides, the study contents must be organized in order that the learners may acquire a general knowledge necessary for increasing their speech capability and the ways of speech customized to diverse situations and goals of speech. Such contents must be organized under the principles of continuity, sequence, and integration and must enable an efficient teaching-learning of speech communication. Designing the curricula of speech communication education urgently necessitates a systematic research on what must be taught and learned to increase the learner``s speech capability.
