이 연구는 작문 교육 연구의 새로운 방향을 크게 ``방법``과 ``내용``으로 나누어 논의하였다. 전통적으로 논의되어 온 연구 과제들은 ``내용`` 범주에 포함하여 다루었고, 그간 잘 논의되지 않았던 작문 교육의 연구 방법을 ``방법`` 범주로 따로 독립하여 다루었다. 작문 교육 연구의 새로운 방향으로 연구 방법에 대한 논의를 제안함으로써 작문 교육 연구를 체계화하는 데 요구되는 기초를 모색하고자 하였다. 작문 교육 연구의 방법에서는 작문 교육 연구를 위한 방법론의 탐색, 다양한 작문 교육 연구 방법 활용 및 방법적 개념 활용을 논의하였다. 이를 통하여 체계적인 작문 교육 연구를 위해서는 방법에 대한 이론적 논의가 요청된다는 점, 다른 학문 분야에서 활용되고 있는 연구 방법이나 방법적 개념을 적용하는 연구가 이루어져야 한다는 점을 주장하였다. 작문 교육 연구의 내용에서는 학생 중심의 연구, 교사 중심의 연구, 정책 중심의 연구로 구분하여 연구 방향을 논의하였다. 학생 중심의 연구에서는 작문 능력의 개념과 구성 요인을 탐색하는 연구와, 작문 능력의 발달을 탐색하는 연구가 이루어져야 하며, 교사 중심의 연구에서는 교사의 전문성 신장과 관련된 요인을 탐색하는 연구가 이루어져야 한다는 점을 강조하였다. 특히 교사 중심 연구에서는 작문에 대한 교사의 신념, 동기, 태도 등을 밝히는 연구의 필요성을 제시하였다. 정책 중심의 연구에서는 작문 교육과정 및 작문 교재의 개발 및 평가에 대한 연구가 지속적으로 전개되어야 함을 주장하였다.

This paper investigated the new directions of writing education research through dividing into ``methods`` and ``contents``. In this paper traditional research themes of writing education was included in ``contents``, but this investigation focused on research ``methods`` that have not been studied until now. This paper regarded that the methods of writing education research consisted of three parts : (1)exploring the methodology for writing education researches, (2)utilizing the diverse the methods, and (3)application of methodological concepts in other academic sciences. Writing education research will have to progress by developing systematical the methods. And this paper saw that the contents of writing education research consisted of three elements : (1)student-based researches, (2)teacher-based researches, and (3)policy-based researches. The student-based researches will aim to identify the ``writing abilities`` and the constructs of them. The teacher-based researches will have to elements relating to teacher professionalism, especially will focus on writing beliefs, motivators, attitudes of teachers. The policy-based researches are going to concentrate on development and evaluation of writing curriculum and writing textbook.
