본 연구는 2002년 월드컵 공동 개최국인 한국과 일본의 월드컵 관련 사이트 이용이 어떻게 이루어지고 있으며 그 이용에 영향을 미치는 요인은 무엇인지에 관심을 두고 시작되었다. 그래서 스포츠의 사회적 기능·개인가치·월드컵 관련 사이트의 이용 및 태도에 따라 한국인과 일본인은 각각 어떠한 차이를 보이는지를 연구하였다. 연구대상은 한국인과 일본인의 다양한 계층 중에서 스포츠 사이트에 가장 많이 접속하는 20대의 대학생으로 선정하였다. 분석방법으로는 데이터를 분류하여 이들 사이에 존재하는 패턴을 나무형태로 나타나는 의사결정나무기법을 사용하였다. 의사결정나무기법은 데이터 마이닝의 분류 작업에 주로 사용하는 방법으로, 데이터를 분류하여 이들 사이에 존재하는 패턴을 나무형태로 나타나는 것이다. 의사결정나무는 자료 분포 형태에 대한 가정을 필요로 하지 않는 비모수적인 방법으로 데이터가 기록된 그대로 처리할 수 있기 때문에, 데이터 변환 단계에서 소요시간과 노력을 단축시켜준다. 또 어떤 속성이 각 분류에 결정적인 영향을 주는지 쉽게 알 수 있고 해석이 용이하다는 장점을 지닌다. 연구 결과, 한국인의 경우 월드컵 스타 소식을 알아보기 위한 동기가 관련 사이트 방문에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 요인으로 나타났고, 다음으로는 성별과 스포츠 관련기사 숙독 정도가 월드컵 관련 사이트 방문의 영향요인인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 한편 일본인의 경우에는, 월드컵에 관련된 정보 검색을 위해 관련 사이트를 방문하는 경우가 가장 많았으며 월드컵 스타의 소식을 알아보기 위한 것은 두 번째 요인으로 나타났다.

This study investigated how Koreans and Japanese, who held 2002 FIFA World Cup, used World Cup related web sites and what the effect factors in using those sites were. The differences in the thinking between Koreans and Japanese in terms of the social role of sports, individual values, and the usage of World Cup related web sites were studied. For this study, Korean and Japanese college students in their twenties were chosen for the research participants on the assumption that they visit sports web sites much more frequently than other age ranges. The decision trees, which are used as the analysis method for this study, are a technique in classifying the data mining. This technique indicates a classification model which presents certain pattern according to the analysis of old collected data to the compounding of characteristics to the tree form. The decision trees are also a non-parametric statistical method which needs no assumption of data distribution so that it is very efficient in terms of shortening the duration and endeavor with respect to the state of data transformation. In addition, this technique is easy to interpret as well as useful in finding what characteristics significantly affect each classification. The results of this study showed that for Koreans, reading about World Cup star players was the most effective factor in visiting World Cup related web sites. It was found that the next effective factor for visiting the web sites was gender and the level of understanding about sports related news. On the other hand, the Japanese mostly visited the web sites to search World Cup related information and then to read about the news of World Cup stars.
