본 논문은 민주주의와 폭력의 관계를 주제로 삼는다. 폭력은 기존의 물리적이고 정치적인 갈등의 형태로 다뤄질 수도 있지만, 교육적ㆍ문화적ㆍ복지적 폭력의 형태로 혹은 구조적이고 상징적인 폭력의 형태로도 인식될 수 있다. 후자의 폭력에 주의를 기울일수록, 폭력은 문화적 상징화의 과정에 얽혀 들어간다. 근대 민주주의의 발전을 그것과의 연관 속에서 성찰할 때, 민주주의는 폭력의 획기적인 극복을 가져오지도 않았고 그 극복을 본질적인 목적으로 삼지도 않은 듯하다. 오히려 우리는 오래된 폭력들이 새로운 형태의 폭력들로 대체되는 과정에 직면한다. 그런데 이 과정을 설명하기 위한 문화적이고 상징적인 관점은, 그것이 날카로울수록 오히려, 폭력을 해결하기 어려운 문제로 상징화시키는 듯하다. 폭력은 더 예민해지고 폭발성이 강해 지지만, 더 보이지 않게 된다. 사실 따지고 보면 우리는 폭력에 대한 가장 기본적인 물음도 대답하지 못한 상태에 있다. 왜 현대인들은 점점 더 폭력의 문제에 예민해지고 그것들은 더 전염성을 띠는 것일까? 왜 주체는 점점 남의 시선 속에 갇히면서, 폭력을 느끼는 것일까?

This Article pose the question about the relation between democracy and violence. Violence itself has different faces. It can be seen in the forms of physical, economic and political conflicts. But it can be seen in the forms of educational, cultural, structural and symbolic violence. From this standpoint, the violence seems to take part in the confused process of cultural symbolization. If we pay close attention to it, we can say that modern democratization itself did not bring about neither the solution of the traditional violence or itself had it as a original object. We observe rather that the old violences have been substituted for the new educational, cultural and symbolic ones. However, this process turns to be hard to explain. The cultural and symbolic angle about the violence seems to make the problem of violence even much more unraveled. The violence become more and more symbolic, that is to say, more deep rooted, but more concealed. We should pose philosophical question about violence now in the following, well recognizable form. Why are the problems of violence becoming more and more virulent and volatile for modern people?
