The purpose of this paper is to present the pragmatic conditions on the particle construction. In transformational grammar particle constructions were determined by particle movement. But particle movement was not enough to account for the particle construction. The following pragmatic conditions on the particle construction were found in this paper. Direct objects are preceded by particles in the following: (1) when direct objects carry new information (2) when direct objects are important. (3) when direct objects were mentioned long before in discourse (4) when direct objects are fairly unfamiliar. Direct objects are followed by particles in the following: (1) when direct objects carry given information (2) when direct objects are not important (3) when direct objects were mentioned shortly before in discourse (4) when direct objects are familiar (5) when direct objects are expected by verbs. In conclusion, particle constructions are subject to information structure. (Mokwon University)
